How to Clean and Condition a Leather Sofa
With leather, conditioning matters more than cleaning. Wipe gently with a mild soap solution and finish with a leather conditioner.

Supplies
- 2–3 drops dish soap
- 500 ml (2 cups) lukewarm water
- Leather conditioner

- 3 microfiber cloths
- Soft brush
How to do it

Identify the leather type
If the surface is smooth and water beads on it, the leather is finished (coated) and this method is suitable. If water soaks in and darkens it, or the surface is velvety like nubuck or suede, use a specialist product instead.

Remove dust
Dust with a dry microfiber cloth or soft brush and vacuum the gaps between cushions. Wiping over dust scratches leather like sand.

Wipe with a mild soap solution
Mix 2–3 drops of dish soap into 500 ml of lukewarm water, dip a microfiber cloth, wring it out very well and gently wipe the armrests and seats where hand marks build up.

Dry immediately
Wipe off the soap with a cloth dampened in clean water and immediately dry with a dry cloth. Water left on leather causes marks.

Apply leather conditioner
When fully dry, put a pea-sized amount of conditioner on a cloth and spread it thinly in circles. After 10 minutes, buff lightly with a dry cloth to remove the excess and reveal a soft sheen.
Be careful
- Wet wipes and alcohol sanitizers strip the oils from leather and cause cracking. Keep them away from leather sofas.
- Strongly alkaline or acidic cleaners such as baking soda, vinegar or oxygen bleach damage the surface.
- Test any new product on a hidden spot first to make sure it does not change the color.

- Leather dries out and cracks quickly by a window or next to a heater. Keep the sofa at least 50 cm (20 in) away.
- During the heating season, condition every two months to prevent cracking.
- Ballpoint pen marks spread when rubbed. Use a leather cleaner right away or ask a furniture repair shop.
Treat leather like skin
Leather is processed animal hide, so like our own skin it needs both cleansing and moisturizing. Harsh wiping or strong cleaners remove its natural oils, the surface stiffens, and eventually it cracks and peels. The rule for leather sofas is “clean gently, always condition.”
If it is faux leather
Faux leather (PU or PVC) does not need conditioning, but it is just as sensitive to alcohol and harsh cleaners. Wipe with mild soapy water and dry immediately, then finish with a dry cloth instead of conditioner. If the surface has started to peel, a cover or replacement is the realistic option.
FAQ
Can I use hand cream instead of conditioner? Hand cream contains fragrance and water, which can leave marks. Leather conditioner is the safer choice.
