Boiler Pre-Winter Checklist
Visual checks you can do at home before the heating season. Never work on gas pipes or open up the boiler yourself.
Boiler area
- Clear boxes, cleaners, aerosol cans and laundry away from the boiler
- Make sure vents and windows are not blocked
- Test the carbon monoxide alarm (install one if you have none)
Flue
- No loose or separated joints
- No temporary tape patches
- No rust or holes → if in doubt, do not use it and call for service
Test run (30 minutes)
- System pressure is within the recommended range
- No unusual noises
- No drips under the boiler or at pipe joints
- No error codes on the display
- Every room warms up (if not, check the radiator or zone valves)
Call a professional right away if
- You smell gas → shut off the gas, open windows, do not touch switches, leave and call your gas supplier or emergency services
- The flue is disconnected or corroded
- Water keeps leaking
- The boiler is more than 10 years old
