Cleaning Products You Should Never Mix
Stick this inside your bathroom or cleaning cupboard. One cleaner at a time.
These combinations make toxic gas
- Bleach (chlorine) + acidic cleaners (vinegar, citric acid, acidic toilet cleaner) → chlorine gas
- Bleach + ammonia-based cleaners → chloramine gas
- Bleach + rubbing alcohol → harmful chlorinated compounds
- Hydrogen peroxide + vinegar → peracetic acid (irritating and corrosive)
- Different drain cleaners → sudden heat and reactions
Before you clean
- Open the door and turn on the exhaust fan
- Wear rubber gloves and a mask
- Check labels for "chlorine", "acid" and "do not mix"
- Dilute bleach in cold water
- Rinse thoroughly before using another cleaner (ideally another day)
- Never decant cleaners into other bottles
If you have already mixed them
- Leave the area immediately and open windows
- Do not go back in to clean it up
- If coughing will not stop or breathing is difficult, call your local emergency number
