How to Clean a Humidifier Before You Use It Again
Turn on a humidifier straight out of storage and you spray last winter's scale and mold into the room. Cleaning differs by type.
Once the heating comes on, indoor humidity can drop into the 30% range. When your throat starts to feel scratchy, it is time for the humidifier. But if it went into storage last spring without a proper dry, the tank and transducer probably have white scale and pink water mold. Clean it before you switch it on.

For all types: the tank
- Fill the tank halfway with lukewarm water and dissolve 1 tbsp of citric acid.
- Close the cap, shake and leave for about an hour to dissolve the white scale.
- Scrub the corners with a long brush and rinse with clean water until there is no smell.
- Stand it upside down with the cap off to dry completely.
By type
Ultrasonic humidifiers depend on the round transducer in the base. Scale on it reduces output. Clean it gently with a cotton swab or soft brush dipped in citric acid solution. Scraping with steel wool or sharp tools will break it.
Warm mist humidifiers build up scale on the heating element. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for soaking or heating citric acid solution. It works like descaling an electric kettle.
Evaporative humidifiers trap scale and bacteria in the wick. Replacing it on the manufacturer’s schedule is the surest option. If it is washable, soak it in citric acid solution, rinse and dry completely.
While in use
- Change the water daily. Do not top up; empty, rinse and refill.
- Clean once or twice a week. Repeat the tank clean above, briefly.
- Use the water your manufacturer recommends. Many recommend tap water. Ultrasonic models can leave white dust on furniture with hard tap water, so check your manual.
- Keep humidity at 40–60%. Higher levels cause window condensation and mold.
Never add anything to the water
Do not add any cleaners, disinfectants, fragrances or essential oils to humidifier water. A humidifier turns water into fine particles you breathe in, so anything in the water goes straight into your lungs. Always rinse the citric acid out thoroughly before filling.
When you put it away
Repeat this cleaning in spring and dry it completely before storage. It will halve next autumn’s work.
